AERA BREAD — BLUE-HUED BAKERY FOR GLUTEN-FREE BREAD, GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES AND SWEET TREATS

AERA BREAD — BLUE-HUED BAKERY FOR GLUTEN-FREE BREAD, GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES AND SWEET TREATS

True blue, baby I love you! At Aera Bread’s new shop in Mitte, they keep things cool – cool azure blue. The second branch to be opened by the gluten-free baking experts, this eye-catching cyan-colored space on Rosenthaler Straße was designed by architects Gonzalez Haase, who certainly have a knack for contemporary interior design. I already know and love Aera from the original Charlottenburg bakery that opened back in 2019 (read more about that here). Whether it’s grilled sandwiches, scones or sweets like the cocoa-chilli amarettini, the team’s baked goodies tick all the boxes. At the new shop you can enjoy the treats outside while watching the Mitte hustle and bustle, or stay in and take a seat on one of the minimalist benches. For people who don’t eat gluten for health reasons, having a second Aera shop will be a lifesaver: I know people who travel from all over to buy this free-from bread. But even if you do eat gluten, you won’t be disappointed by Aera’s loaves. For a foretaste, check out our post on Instagram – we guarantee you’ll soon be planning a bread-buying trip to Mitte.

FULL CIRCLE CLOTHES FOR CHILDREN — NEW AND RECYCLED GARMENTS FROM ONLINE STARTUP MAMELO

FULL CIRCLE CLOTHES FOR CHILDREN — NEW AND RECYCLED GARMENTS FROM ONLINE STARTUP MAMELO

Can you afford to buy quality, sustainable children’s clothing when the little ones grow out of things so quickly? Mameloshows how you can: the Berlin-based startup produces timeless childrenswear for kids aged zero to eight from 100 percent organically produced merino wool. The range is still growing, but beautiful cardigans, hats and blankets are already available. The concept is simple: as soon as your child has outgrown their clothes, they can be returned to Mamelo for a discount on a bigger size or against store credit. Wearable items will be given a new home, while anything too worn out will be recycled into new yarn. This is the circular economy in action: long-lasting clothes and textiles that accompany your child – and others – through the first years of their lives.

CHARMING CORNER FOR FLAVOR-PACKED TREATS TO GO — EMPANADAS AND JUICES AT CAMINITO

CHARMING CORNER FOR FLAVOR-PACKED TREATS TO GO — EMPANADAS AND JUICES AT CAMINITO

If you’re looking for somewhere where South American flavors come with a vitamin hit, Caminito should be high on your list. Step inside this takeaway shop and you’ll be greeted by an interior space adorned with beautiful bouquets and a display of natural wine. The empanadas aren’t bad, either: rows of stuffed pastries shine like jewels in their steel-and-glass display. Baked fresh every morning, they pair beautifully with the fresh juice menu, which includes the “red” drink with beetroot, orange, apple and ginger. Founders Darius and Kinga opened Caminito in October 2021 after deciding to deploy their restaurant experience – Kinga’s kitchen credits include Shed – to create a space focused on traditional pastry.

The varieties include the “Beef Green” with meat, onion, olives and egg, classic spinach with potatoes, goats cheese and pumpkin seeds and, for the vegans, the ratatouille with zucchini, pepper, tomato and thyme. Besides the signature fillings, the team also serve seasonal creations meaning there’s always something new to try. Not to be missed is the delicious fresh chimichurri sauce that ticks all the boxes for flavor and texture. Caminito’s central location means’s it ideal if you want to escape the office for a pastry-based pick-me-up, though if you ask us the sauce alone is worth the trip to Mitte…

REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR — DONATE GIFTS AND ESSENTIAL ITEMS THIS CHRISTMAS WITH LA CASE PAULETTE

REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR — DONATE GIFTS AND ESSENTIAL ITEMS THIS CHRISTMAS WITH LA CASE PAULETTE

As you’ve probably noticed, it’s (almost) the festive season again. But as we stock up on goodies to share with loved ones, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the people in Berlin for whom the season might be less joy-filled. Luckily there’s a great way to give something back: the Reverse Advent Calendar from the La Case Paulette store in Prenzlauer Berg, which lets you donate gifts and essentials to Berliners who are homeless or in otherwise difficult circumstances. What you put inside is up to you: everything from Christmas cards, drawings and chocolates to the essential items that rough sleepers or people in tough situations need. For more ideas on what to pack check out the initiative’s website. On Christmas Eve, the calendars will be distributed by the team across the city in partnership with Moabit Hilft e.V. Now in its second year, the concept comes from sisters Anne-Cécile and Audrey Picardo, who brought the idea over from their native France. While you are dropping off your gift, don’t forget to check out the store itself: it’s full of sustainable garments and design objects curated from young French designers and brands.
