CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF PRO-PEACE COFFEE, TEA AND MORE — CONFLICTFOOD

CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF PRO-PEACE COFFEE, TEA AND MORE — CONFLICTFOOD

If you want to change the world for the better, you can do worse than starting with breakfast. Besides offering a caffeine kick, your morning coffee can also alleviate poverty and make the world a more peaceful place. At least that’s the promise of Conflictfood, the Berlin startup selling food and drink that makes a difference. Sourced from conflict-hit countries, its delicacies provide fair incomes to producers whose lives are affected by war. The Jadae coffee, for instance, is farmed by members of the Akha ethnic minority community in the highlands of Myanmar. Buying these farmers’ beans gives them an independent existence and gives you a great brew, with rich hazelnut and caramel aromas thanks to the hand-picked harvesting and gentle processing of the coffee.

But Conflictfood is about more than just coffee beans. The social enterprise was founded in 2016 by Salem El-Mogaddedi and Gernot Würtenberger, who began working with farmers in western Afghanistan to bring top-quality saffron to Europe. Where opium fields once stood, crocus plant meadows began to flourish. Since then, the duo have expanded the range with the likes of organic tea and aromatic dried ginger powder from Myanmar. A highlight is definitely the organic freekeh, an ancient grain that is produced in the Palastinian West Bank. Chewy and nutty, freekeh is full of fiber and is a great addition to Middle-Eastern inspired salad and meat dishes. Good dinners that do good: what’s not to like?

FØRMPROJEKT X STUDIO HILAL: POP-UP EVENT WITH COLORFUL BLANKETS AND SILK DESIGNS

FØRMPROJEKT X STUDIO HILAL: POP-UP EVENT WITH COLORFUL BLANKETS AND SILK DESIGNS

Following a journey that brought them from Barcelona to Berlin, in June 2021 Førmprojekt founders Nina and Ignacio gave their online store a physical space when they moved into a courtyard shop in Kreuzberg. There you can browse through the pair’s hand-picked accessories and interior design pieces: curved candles, ceramics and hand-woven rugs – all curated from up-and-coming designers and artists. The duo have now realized another of their goals, namely to collaborate with creatives and artists to create small product runs. Launching at a special event in the shop tomorrow and Saturday (05 & 06.11.2021) their first collaboration is with Barcelona-based illustrator, ceramicist and close friend Esther Lara, with whom they have developed the Las Margaritas Blanket. Available in two versions, this wooly throw is a homage to carefree summers and is perfect for getting cozy on cold autumn days.

Also joining the pop-up are sisters Zuhra and Moshtari from Studio Hilal with a collection of their printed silk scarves. The limited collection, which can be worn or hung on the wall, is named Mehmooni – a Farsi word describing a gathering of family and friends over good food. With their scarves, the sisters have captured these good vibes. For a nice get-together of your own, drop by the pop-up and get yourself some German-Spanish-Persian inspiration. And there’s more: you can look forward to small discounts on the Førmprojekt range.

PHARMACY ON YOUR PHONE — ALL-DAY MEDICINE AND COSMETICS DELIVERY BY MAYD

PHARMACY ON YOUR PHONE — ALL-DAY MEDICINE AND COSMETICS DELIVERY BY MAYD

From all-night Spätis to restaurants that never close, Berlin has a fair claim to being a 24/7 city. But if you need to go to the pharmacy it’s a different story: if you’re sick on a Sunday or need cough syrup after 7pm, you’re in for a long search for an all-hours chemist. Luckily, some enterprising Berliners have come up with a smartphone-based solution in the form of Mayd, a pharmacy app which delivers medicines and health and beauty products right to your door. Though not strictly 24/7, the app is available every day from 8 in the morning to midnight – including weekends – saving you from those late-night hunts for medical supplies. Launched in October 2021, the Berlin-based platform works just like the grocery delivery apps you might be familiar with: you select what you want, tap “order” and your items will be delivered from a local pharmacy by bike in around 30 minutes. The selection features around 2000 items, including all the usual non-prescription medicines, from aspirin to contact lens fluid. Also available are cosmetics from pharmacy brands like La Roche-Posay and Vichy – ideal if you have forgotten to stock up on your favorite day cream. And in case you were wondering if this convenience costs more: delivery with the app is free of charge. Healthcare and self-care has never been so carefree.

REPAIR & UPCYCLING WORKSHOPS AND INSTORE ART — LIFEWEAR DAYS AT UNIQLO

REPAIR & UPCYCLING WORKSHOPS AND INSTORE ART — LIFEWEAR DAYS AT UNIQLO

Broken buttons, torn seams and faded colors – three sure signs it’s the end of the road for your favorite jeans. But before banishing your beloved garments to the bin, why not try your hand at repairing them with help from the fashion-forward team at Uniqlo. The clothing brand is offering free workshops for fixing up your clothes at the “Second Life Studio” located in the Uniqlo Flagship Store on Tauentzienstraße in Charlottenburg. Open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the studio is offering workshops every second Saturday from this week that will show you how to repair or repurpose any Uniqlo item – though you can of course use your new skills for any garment. They’re part of the LifeWear Days program that includes special workshops and colorful in-store artwork showing scenes of Berlin city life from illustrator Laura Breiling. At the “Paint Your Jeans” session (13.11.2021) you can give old jeans new flair by applying fresh colors or upcycling them into a handy bag.

If your items are still wearable and you would prefer them to go to a good cause, you can also donate them to the Berliner Stadtmission. The organization is a partner for the Second life Studio and provides clothing and other support to people in difficult circumstances. You can help the cause by handing in your items next time you shop at any of Uniqlo’s Berlin stores. Speaking of shopping: once you’ve got your jeans back into shape, why not take the chance to refresh your winter wardrobe with some pieces from the A/W LifeWear collection. Pick from natural-fiber knits, Heattech undergarments that use cutting-edge materials to keep you warm, and the compact Ultra Light Down jackets made from recycled or certified responsible down. Our favorite is the vest, which is a perfect add-on to wear under your favorite jacket for extra warmth.
