FRENCH FLAIR AT HERMANNPLATZ: BOUTIQUE DE LA MAISON OFFERS PASTRIES & FINE CAKES

FRENCH FLAIR AT HERMANNPLATZ: BOUTIQUE DE LA MAISON OFFERS PASTRIES & FINE CAKES

Bonjour Berlin – there’s a new gem on Urbanstraße! Opening October 2023, Boutique de La Maison doles out distinctive French treats. If the name sounds familiar, you’re probably thinking of the popular cafe La Maison on Paul-Lincke-Ufer. And that’s right! Owner Andreas Altmeyer has now expanded with a second location. Andreas is originally from Frankfurt am Main, and his passion for French baking began in his childhood: when he moved to Lyon for love in 2000, he also discovered his love for French cuisine. So, when he left Lyon for Berlin, he found himself in need of a cafe with French pastries and good coffee. With the support of a French baker friend, he decided to bring the patisserie world of France to Berlin. Thus, the first La Maison was launched in May 2019. With its growing popularity, the idea of Boutique de La Maison was born. The new spot on Urbanstraße has a completely different design and almost looks like a lab – or just like a fashion brand’s boutique: minimalist, clean and airy design with no tables to sit at – just tall wooden chairs by the window. The large counter is the centerpiece.

Here, along with ready-to-eat sandwiches and hearty croissants, lie graceful cakes and pies. The seductive scent of butter and coffee invites you to explore the boulangerie section. Here, of course, you’ll find the perfect croissants (even vegan ones!), pain au chocolat, and almond pastries. Or how about a classic baguette? A cookie with that? No matter whether you want to take the pastries with you or prefer to enjoy them over a coffee right there, you know you’ll be back, because there’s a lot to try. And who knows, maybe Andrea’s new favorite, the marzipan poppy seed bun, will become your favorite too. So why go far away when the good things are so close? Take a short trip to Urbanstraße and enjoy a taste of France.

SWEET, STICKY, DELICIOUS: MOCHI MAKING WORKSHOP WITH YUI FUKAMI AT MUJI ON KUDAMM

SWEET, STICKY, DELICIOUS: MOCHI MAKING WORKSHOP WITH YUI FUKAMI AT MUJI ON KUDAMM

Mochis – who doesn’t love them? The round confection with a soft rice shell and a fondant center is a classic of Japanese cuisine and a real gourmet dessert. Ever wanted to know how they are made? Yui Fukami from Studio Fukamisori will show you how. On three Saturdays in November at the Muji Flagship Store on Ku’damm, you’ll learn how to make the traditional gluten-free daifukumochi いちご大福 yourself from rice flour dough (azuki), red bean paste (shiroan) and fresh fruit. When Yui moved to Berlin in 2017 from her home in Osaka, Japan, via a stopover in New Zealand, she missed her mother’s strawberry daifuku, and started experimenting on her own so she could snack on the sticky-sweet rice balls all year long. Initially, Yui shared her stories and recipes with friends. Now, with her workshops, she shows anyone homesick for Japan or with a curious sweet tooth how to make mochi. During the workshop you’ll get immersed in the art of making mochi and discover modern mochi culture in Japan and its exciting history. At the end of the session, you’ll be able to enjoy your own mochis, accompanied by a nice Japanese tea. Are you ready for some mochi magic?

AUSTRIA IN MITTE — SATISFY YOUR WANDERLUST AT FEEL AUSTRIA ON AUGUSTSTRASSE

AUSTRIA IN MITTE — SATISFY YOUR WANDERLUST AT FEEL AUSTRIA ON AUGUSTSTRASSE

Summer’s over and winter’s not yet arrived, so it’s time to start daydreaming. For anyone who has wanderlust but is stuck in cold Berlin, maybe a day trip to Austria is worth it – because it’s right on Auguststrasse, at least for a few days (25–28.10.2023). The Alpine country beckons visitors to the gallery-like pop-up “Feel Austria” with all the hospitality, tempting specialties and soul-soothing warmth for which we know and love the nation. There’s not only lots of exquisite products to discover, but also cooking demonstrations (who’s heard of Steirisches Wurzelfleisch?), wine, beer and cheese tastings, as well as Gmundner ceramic painting classes all on the program. Places are limited, so it’s best to sign up for one of the workshops right away. Mountain tradition and cozy feelings can also be taken home later to accompany you through the long-lasting Berlin autumn. Workshops and events are free of charge. It’s just like a real vacation to tide you over. And who knows: maybe your next trip will even take you to the mountains?

ALL OF BERLIN’S STAGES AT A GLANCE — THE BERLIN BÜHNEN PORTAL

ALL OF BERLIN’S STAGES AT A GLANCE — THE BERLIN BÜHNEN PORTAL

Berlin’s countless cultural offerings are both a curse and a blessing – more than 150 theaters and stages are spread throughout the city. It’s almost impossible to keep track of them all. Because of this, it happens time and again that I find out about a play too late – i.e., when it’s either over or already sold out. But there’s a simple solution: online portal Berlin Bühnen, which specializes in bringing order to the city’s theatrical hubbub. The platform’s cross-venue, highly organized schedule not only allows users to explore the most popular productions, but offers plenty of inspiration and ideas for new finds and shows across all genres. Berlin Bühnen is not only a good guide for theater fans; there’s also dance, comedy and cabaret, digital events, readings, concerts, puppet theater and much more. The portal offers you the option to browse for different languages or filter by venues, premieres, times, indoor or open-air. Last but not least, there’s an online magazine full of news, information and highlights from the scene and the city in particular – including membership circles, ticket clubs and discount communities. As a portal, Berliner Bühnen really is like the cultural search engine of my dreams.
