THE MAKERY — LEARNING NEW SKILLS WITH EXPERT-LED WORKSHOPS

THE MAKERY — LEARNING NEW SKILLS WITH EXPERT-LED WORKSHOPS

“Everything on the table in front of you is alive,” says Edible Alchemy founder Alexis Goertz, gesturing to a table of homemade sourdough, miso butter and a few other curious-looking jars. “But don’t let that scare you!” Offering the chance to test all of the fermented goods before participating in an in-depth sourdough lesson, Edible Alchemy is just one of the exciting, unique workshops offered through The Makery. Co-founded by Jasper Kolb and Maija Kassari in 2017, The Makery is a platform for those who love to make and learn. With the aim of connecting creative makers from across Berlin to unconventional activity seekers, The Makery now offers classes in every corner of the city, teaching anything from cyanotype creation in Neukölln to Chinese tea ceremonies in Prenzlauer Berg. The next time you find yourself bored on a Sunday afternoon, seeking a superb birthday present or simply yearning to perfect your next batch of sourdough, The Makery will have just the right workshop for you. Tickets for all workshops by The Makery are available online and take place in various locations across town.

MOSS KERAMIK — LEARN THE ART OF POTTERY FROM MIA OR VISIT THE OPEN STUDIO

MOSS KERAMIK — LEARN THE ART OF POTTERY FROM MIA OR VISIT THE OPEN STUDIO

Joining a class at Moss Keramik with Mia Moss was one of the best decisions I made in 2018. Pottery is big these days, so naturally I had to try it out. The group was small, just four people, learning to shape clay pots on the wheel. Mia’s passion for pottery isn’t new – it goes back to a class she took eight years ago in the US. She was educated pre-hype, and has a lot of experience. She patiently shares that expertise while keeping a relaxed, witty vibe to her lessons. After all, handmade pottery isn’t about perfection, it’s about trying – and trying again – but always having a good time. Pottery is no longer a hobby exclusive to 50+ vacationers in Italy – it’s great for breaking free of your digital devices. Try scrolling with clay on your hands! Mia’s classes are popular, so book now or test your luck. As for me, I’ll be going back for more time on the wheel. You can also pick up a unique piece by Mia herself at her February 2019 open studio – I’ll be getting one! (Text: Nina Trippel / Photos: Moss Keramik)

MILES CARSHARING: PAY FOR THE RIDE, NOT THE TRAFFIC

MILES CARSHARING: PAY FOR THE RIDE, NOT THE TRAFFIC

For all its practicality, the cost of car sharing can rack up fast – especially when crossing Berlin at rush hour. Here to remove the frustration from the equation is Miles, a carsharing scheme that’s priced according to the distance you drive, not the time you spend in traffic. Need to make a spontaneous trip across town? Just download the app, find a Miles car near you, and drive off stress-free. Want to take a Sunday trip out of town? The “Milesroadie” option saves you money on distances up to 100km. Require a vehicle for a move or to pick up furniture at Ikea? Book a Miles Transporter to get your stuff safely from A to B. For every kilometer driven, the company donates one cent to Berlin charities like Fadi Saad, Berliner Tafel or SchutzengelWerk. And in case you needed another reason to get on board – seeing as Cee Cee Creative is behind Miles‘ design, we’re giving our readers 15€ worth of Miles credit on your first ride with the code “MILESxCeeCee”. Register and enter the code in the promotion field of the app. Happy stress-free driving! (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

ODEON KINO: A VINTAGE CINEMA WITH A CULT FOLLOWING

ODEON KINO: A VINTAGE CINEMA WITH A CULT FOLLOWING

A vivid neon green sign illuminates the entrance to Odeon Kino, the neighborhood cinema with a cult following. In true American cinema style, the buttery scent of salted popcorn lingers in the foyer welcoming all inside – especially those who want to see films in their original language. The Schöneberg cinema has a strong following for just that reason: Odeon claims to be Berlin’s ‘pioneer of OV culture’ as the first cinema to show films in their original English version. Opened originally as ‘Sylvie’ in the 1950s, Odeon was taken over by Yorck Kinogruppe — Berlin’s largest cinema association — in the 80s and has retained its stellar reputation ever since. With just one hall of close to 400 comfy red seats, Odeon Kino feels like a step back in time and is well worth a visit the next time you want to see an English movie. But be warned: There are no designated seats, so you’ll need to get there early if you want to nab a good spot. (Text: Laura Box / Photos: Yorck Kinogruppe & Daniel Horn)
